Business Vocabulary

In his talk, Matt uses some vocabulary that’s commonly used in business contexts. Let’s take a look at some of that language (highlighted below). Use the context (and a dictionary if necessary) to understand the vocabulary.

  • Distributed work is the future of the workforce.
    Remote work is a discipline for the individual worker, but distributed work is a discipline for the entire organization.
  • The two companies agreed to collaborate.
    They collaborated on a book about dogs.
    The pair collaborated with each other on the film.
  • Each of the area managers enjoys considerable autonomy in the running of his or her own area.
    For decades, Hong Kong played the role of safe haven for mainland entrepreneurs because of its autonomy from China.
  • Her study was the first to document this type of behavior in gorillas.
    He wrote a book documenting their struggle.
  • A recent study suggests that short intense bursts of exercise may be more effective for weight loss than longer less intense workouts.
    Scientists recently detected a short intense burst of radio signals emanating from space.
  • He receives a small stipend for his work as a research fellow.
    As a student advisor, she gets a monthly stipend from the college.
  • We pooled our money and rented a car.
    We can do more when we pool our ideas and resources.
    The kids pooled their money to buy their parents a wedding anniversary gift.
  • If we could tap into all that energy and creativity, we could achieve great success.
    I’ve asked the committee to brainstorm ways that we might tap into this new market.
