Warm-Up

The word “remote” can be used in three ways:

  • relating to a place
She enjoys reading about remote lands.
The mission is to transport medical supplies to remote areas/places/regions of the globe.
  • relating to a time (always used before a noun)
a tradition that dates back to remote antiquity
an invention that may be available in the remote future
  • relating to a probability
There is a remote [slight] possibility that I’ll be free Friday night.
remote chance [= a very small possibility]

Read the two statements below and decide which use of remote they exemplify:

  1. …43% of employees say they work remotely at least some of the time. Nearly one third of those do it four to five days a week.
  2. Research shows that remote workers are more productive. In a two year experiment at a real company, remote workers did 13% more work in the same amount of time as their peers.

Now, consider the questions below. What are some key ideas that will help you to answer them? Organize your thoughts a bit in English. Then, answer them as if you were speaking with a decision-maker in a medium-sized business. You’ll get the best practice if you practice answering by speaking out loud.

  1. What does remote working mean?
  2. Why do some workers want to work remotely?
  3. What benefits do employers gain from the practice of remote working?
  4. What would be good advice for companies who want to introduce remote working to their employees?
